The Ethical Enterprise Challenge is back!
The popular Ethical Enterprise Challenge, a fun annual event which brings members together of school-based co-operatives and Young Co-operatives across the country to show off their enterprise skills, will be returning in 2013. Participants are challenged to work together to devise new and creative products and business models whilst demonstrating how they are putting the co-operative values and principles into action

Research finds student engagement in Spain is highest in co-operative schools
Research undertaken in the Basque Country and Catalonia in Spain has found that students at co-operative schools are more engaged than students in other types of schools.

Iker Ros looked at student engagement in both primary and secondary schools for his PhD in Psychopedagogy. He considered three aspects of student engagement: emotional or psychological (the feeling of belonging to the schools); behavioural – gained from data on student participation in teaching and extramural activities; and cognitive, meaning students’ perception of academic work and future expectations.

Ros analysed the differences in the organisational development of schools, finding that it is higher in co-operative schools than in public and subsidised schools. He attributes this to the horizontal and collaborative nature of co-operative schools, which leads to greater organisational learning.

Ros foresees an increase in the number of co-operative schools due to the economic crisis and the fall in the number of members of religious orders who are putting the management of their schools into the hands of teachers through co-operative formulas.

Legacoop Italy’s co-op
Roberto Cardinale from Italian co-operative Legacoop has shared his ideas for engaging the next generation of co-operators in an interview with the Co-operative News.

Currently, Legacoop runs co-operative entrepreneurship training programmes in schools, with a practical and a theoretical dimension. Students get involved in gardening, buying materials, volunteering within the community or creating a business plan for a virtual co-operative. One of Legacoop’s most successful youth projects is Bellacoopia, which comprised a series of cross-national projects in involving young co-operators from across the world.

Following the success of previous videoconferences for co-operative schools we are delighted to be able to ask you and your class to join us for a videoconference to be held in conjunction with Just Change, which will take the theme of tea.

The videoconference will take place on Tuesday 29 January from 10am-12noon.

The aim is to find out how tea producers in India are co-operating with tea drinkers in the UK in fair trade that’s good for everyone.

Just Change is about fair trade with a human face. Just Change tea and spices are grown by ‘adivasi’ tribal communities in India, who are working together to improve the livelihoods of their members. Their tea and spices are sold in the UK, not just in shops but by volunteers and community organisations who want to share the adivasis’ amazing story and use the sales income to support local community projects. Just Change is about fair trade for mutual benefit between Indian and UK communities and solidarity among people across the world.

Tea drinking has a very special place in the history and everyday life of the UK and India alike. In this videoconference you will be able to meet people from Just Change communities in India and explore participants’ experiences and knowledge of tea and fair trade through activities and discussions. You will even make some ‘masala chai’ – delicious spiced Indian tea – with live tips from the experts!

Co-operatives United expo

Staff and Learners the Co-operatives United expo which takes place at Manchester Central at the end of the month to mark the end of the International Year of Co-operatives?

What better way to find out more about co-operatives and co-operation than visiting and speaking to members of co-operatives from all over the world, who will have stands at the Expo. You can also see performances from co-operative schools alongside a film programme, activities and workshops for all ages. We are delighted that we will also be joined by some members of Young Co-operatives, who will be selling their wares and telling us all about their work.

Co-operatives United would be an ideal half-term trip for anyone within travelling distance of Manchester.

Budding Film Makers

A youth film academy has started its search for screenplays to be made into full length feature films next year.

The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy (BYFA) gives 14-25 year-olds unique experiences of the movie industry and is seeking new scripts or screenplays of classics, for next summers filming schedule.

We back the The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy as part of our commitment to inspiring young people and, this year, it shot four movies at film-making summer camps which combine professionals from film and education to mentor students and offer everything from acting to make-up and camera through to post-production.

Previous films from the BYFA have included a contemporary retelling of ‘Julius Caesar’ which was selected for the Raindance International Film Festival and, ‘The Rochdale Pioneers’, a new film starring John Henshaw which is to be screened on Film4 during November as part of the channels British Connection Season.

The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy is looking for budding screenwriters to submit scripts to BYFA@co-operative.coop by 8 November.
